Choosing the Right Personal Injury Lawyer

The truth is, most personal injury lawyers in Ontario are more than qualified to handle your injury claim. Given that your case is likely as unique as you are, finding the right fit can be hard. And with so many lawyers to choose from it can be very difficult to make the right choice for you. For example, if you are not a native English speaker, you may want to consider retaining a lawyer who speak your language or one that is able to use a translator. Language is just one element that can complicate finding the right lawyer for you and your case. Here are a few tips to help you make your decision.

Experience

Generally speaking, the more experienced in personal injury claims your lawyer is, the better off you and your case will be. Do a some research to see how long your lawyer has been practicing and if they have completed any trials or hearings. While experience is obviously a plus, it is not the end all be all. A lawyer with less trial or hearing experience can still be knowledgeable and more than ready to take on and win a trial. A potential lawyer’s willingness to go the distance and complete a trial on your behalf can be just as beneficial as an older lawyer’s experience.

Empathy

Does your lawyer know how your feeling because they may have been where you are? Does your potential lawyer speak to you like an individual or like your just another personal injury case? Are they sympathetic and empathic to the fact that you may be unable to work and support your family or is this glossed over? A personal injury lawyer must be able to relate and empathize with their client when they might be feeling their worst. They should not offer false promises but the lawyer should offer them hope that brighter days may be ahead.

Communication

Lawyers, like most professions, are typically very busy. However, time should always be made to address client concerns and return emails/calls. A lack of communication and responsiveness is often a primary complaint of clients. At TSF Law, we have a 24 hour or less guarantee when it comes to responding to clients. Determining how responsive your potential lawyer may be poses challenges, however most firms are now on Google and have reviews. This is a great resource to utilize.
