Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – a Disability

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also know as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling illness that affects over half a million Canadians, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. This illness can affect multiple working systems of the body and has a debilitating affect on those who suffer from it. There is an exhaustive list of symptoms which are characterized by CFS/ME, for many symptoms have a further list of adverse ripple effects. CFS is characterized and identified by most doctors when patients struggle with the following:

  • Ongoing and often overwhelming fatigue that interferes with one’s day-to-day life, and cannot be relieved with any amount of rest
  • An increase in malaise after mental and physical activities, with worsening symptoms of feeling overall unwell (mentally and physically)
  • Body aches and pains (often CFS is confused and wrongfully diagnosed as Fibromyalgia)
  • Sleep dysfunction and the development of sleep disorders such as insomnia
  • An increasing decline of cognitive function (especially affecting areas of memory and concentration)

Disability Symptoms

When managing these symptoms, employees have to also juggle pain management, heart abnormalities, increase in sensory stressors such as light and sound, fevers and chills, as well as the development of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Furthermore, when someone is facing these symptoms, often their ability to work declines and soon they face having to go on short term or long term disability.

Denied Claims for CFS

Given that the direct cause of CFS are not known, a lot of insurance companies bully claimants and question the legitimacy of the short term and/or long term disability. Insurance companies have been known to instill doubt and often overlook the seriousness of the symptoms which claimants are suffering from.
